Anaesthetists are increasingly in demand in MSF projects. To work with us as an anaesthetist, you must be flexible enough to work in isolated contexts and with other staff who often have little training.

Resources in operating rooms can be limited (in some cases there is not even an x-ray machine) and many of the operations we perform are on patients who have been victims of armed conflict and violence, although we also work in other contexts.

In addition to working in the operating room, anaesthetists are responsible for studying the surgical needs, following up patients (including pain treatment) and training national staff.

As an organisation that responds to emergencies, we sometimes ask our anaesthetists to go to the field with short notice.

Essential requirements:

  • Degree in Medicine and completed residency in Anaesthesiology.
  • Membership of a professional medical association.
  • At least 2 years’ work experience.
  • Experience in paediatric, obstetric and trauma anaesthetics.
  • Experience in dissociative anaesthesia (e.g. with ketamine).
  • Extensive experience in epidural anaesthesia.
  • Ability to work with limited resources and in difficult conditions.
  • Good level of English and/or French. Priority will be given to candidates who speak both languages.
  • Availability of three months, although longer availibility is preferable.
  • Basic IT skills.
  • Compliance with MSF's working rules and anaesthetics and surgery protocols.

Desired requirements:

  • Field experience with other NGOs.
  • Knowledge of Arabic, Portuguese and/or Spanish.
  • Specialist training and/or experience, for example in tropical diseases or public health.
  • Experience in the supervision, management and training of staff.

What we offer:

  • Preparatory course before leaving to the field.
  • Legal contract for the duration of the mission.
  • The gross basic salary is approximately €1,300 per month during first missions and for positions of lesser responsibility. The salary is regularly reviewed according to the length of time in the organisation and the experience acquired.
  • The chance to develop professionally in an international organisation. A prfile manager from the HR department will monitor your professional development (career path, training, etc.) within the organisation.
  • The opportunity to contribute to our objective of saving lives, alleviating suffering and helping those most in need.
