HEAD OF CREATIVE CONTENT UNIT (Position based in Barcelona)

Creative Content is a Unit within the Communications Department made up of two audiovisual officers, a multimedia production coordinator, two multimedia production officers, an editor/script writer, a graphic motion designer and a production assistant. The Unit ensures the production of high quality multimedia contents (in English and Spanish; at times in Arabic and other languages) to maximize the organizations’ capacity to inform on MSF-OCBA’s projects both through MSF’s communications channels and external media. The Head of the Creative Content Unit provides leadership and strategic direction to OCBA’s photo, video and cross-media production. S/he holds strong team management skills to lead, support, supervise and manage the Unit’s team and possess the talent and aptitude to stimulate the spirit and capacity for creative thinking. S/he develops policies and standards for audiovisual contents on different formats and makes sure these policies and standards are always applied to safeguard MSF’s corporate identity. S/he ensures as well coherence and synergies in the production of both online and offline contents for public communications. In that sense, s/he is responsible for ensuring a fluid production, delivery and monitoring of audiovisual and other multimedia contents such as: -Edition of video footage, audio files and photo-films into productions for internal and external use (b-rolls, clips, films, etc.); -Production, adaptation and edition of specific audiovisual contents for MSF’s social media channels, notably FaceBook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Vimeo; -Production of motion designs and other digital contents; -Layout, design and production of offline contents such as exhibitions, publications, reports and other print materials. S/he works closely with the different units in the Communications Department, i.e. Operational Communications, the Media Unit, Digital Unit and Public Awareness Unit, as well as with other departments in the organization requiring support for the production of multimedia contents, notably the Fundraising Department. S/he provides professional support and guidance within OCBA on multimedia content production and will provide support to field teams with guidance on how to produce audiovisual contents when required. S/he is accountable to the Communications Director.

  1. Strategy and planning
  • Provide leadership and strategic vision for OCBA’s audiovisual content production;
  • Develop policies and standards, including quality standards, for video and cross-media contents;
  • Identify, propose and develop strategies and formats to maximize OCBA’s audiovisual communications ;
  • Lead definition of the Unit’s annual plan, monitor its implementation and ensure strategic objectives are met;
  • Define, manage and monitor the Creative Content Unit’s budget and expenses/investments to optimize resources;
  • Oversee the needs and requests from the Communications Department as well as from the rest of the organization in order to identify and set the priorities of the Creative Content Unit;
  • Foresee future needs and generate capacity to fulfil future institutional challenges;
  • Take part in transversal accountability exercises;
  • Stimulate the spirit and capacity for creative thinking;
  • Elaborate comprehensive statistics and reports based on analytics to identify risks, opportunities and priorities for OCBA’s audiovisual strategies;
  • Provide support and guidance within OCBA (HQ and field) on audiovisual content production when required;
  • Develop and maintain a network of cameramen in Spain and abroad, notably where OCBA runs humanitarian projects;
  • Ensure a pool of external providers for both production or post-production work;
  • Organize visits by the audiovisual team to MSF projects to film or, when relevant, contract external cameramen or film crews;
  • Develop and maintain a network of key actors to contact in order to distribute and ensure the usage of the video contents;


  1. Coordination
  • Meet regularly with the Heads of the different Units in the Communications Department to coordinate production of online and offline contents;
  • Maintain fluid communications with other departments (i.e. Fundraising, General Direction Human Resources and Medical department) to coordinate production of online and offline contents;
  • Identify and produce audiovisual contents on OCBA’s operations in coordination with the Operational Communication Unit;
  • Identify and produce audiovisual and cross-media contents for public communication purposes in coordination with the Media Unit, Digital Unit and the Public Awareness Unit;
  • Oversee the outsourcing of audiovisual and cross-media contents production when necessary, ensuring coherence and synergies in the production of both online and offline contents for public communications, safeguarding MSF’s corporate identity;
  • Ensure application of policies and standards for audiovisual contents, as well as those for offline contents;
  • Participate in MSF’s international working groups;
  • Coordinate and network with audiovisual managers/teams in other MSF operational centres and offices;
  • Act as the focal point for audiovisual production both towards other MSF sections and external interlocutors;
  • Ensure uploading of OCBA’s contents into MSF’s international Media Data-Base;


  1. HR Management
  • Line-manage team members in the Creative Content Unit and oversee their daily activities;
  • Organize the work and production planning of the team, supervise and provide support to team members to ensure the achievement of identified priorities;
  • Conduct evaluations and propose corrective measures to guarantee quality and standards;
  • Organize and chair weekly team meetings and bi-laterals with each member;
  • Define job descriptions in the Creative Content Unit to be validated by HR Department, take part in the recruitment process of the Unit’s team members and support their professional development;
  • Guarantee the Unit’s performance during holidays, sick leaves or else;
  • Identify audiovisual training needs within OCBA communications staff (both HQ and field) and, occasionally, organize internal training / briefing sessions;

  • At least 3 years of experience in professional production and edition of audiovisual contents and news editing (photo and video) according to broadcast standards
  • Demonstrable ability to lead and motivate a team.
  • Familiar with new audiovisual formats
  • Experience managing complex audiovisual projects including with external contractors
  • Experience developing audiovisual strategies within a large and complex organisation
  • Experience managing a budget
  • Previous experience in the international humanitarian sector an advantage
  • Good command of English and Spanish; French and or Arabic an asset 
  • Excellent command of video editing tools: Final Cut Pro, Avid, Premiere and Adobe Creative Suite essential
  • Knowledge of compressing techniques for video and audio for web use.
  • Knowledge of HTML, Photoshop, Flash, and other graphics editing software.
  • Good writing skills for scripts, captions and subtitling
  • Capacity to work in different languages at the same time.

  • Full time job based in the Médecins Sans Frontières-Spain Barcelona Headquarters; with availability to travel to insecure contexts with short notice (less than 10% of the time)

  • Gross salary: 39,448.49 € (divided in 12 monthly payments) + secondary benefits according to MSF-OCBA’s policies
